Will contactless payment really prevent identity theft?

New technology increases the level of convenience day by day but at the same time it may create complications in the existing system! The new technology of contactless payment is right now promising to arrest identity theft by its unique features.

What is contactless payment?

This is the latest development in the world of electronic payments. When you want to make the payment using your credit card, you need not swipe the card in a machine. Just show the card to the scanner and the system will process your payment within seconds.

This is a very convenient method of making small payments. For example, if you are filling gas in a gas station, there may be a queue for payments at the cashiers counter. For a small payment, you may be required to wait for minutes. Even the processing of your cash transaction takes time. The average time for processing such a transaction is about 35 seconds.

With this Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, such payments can be completed in a record time of 13 seconds! As there is no need of your signature for payments under , you will save time and at the same time the risk of credit card fraud is reduced considerably.

How it works?

In every card, a built-in encryption key is inserted. Every transaction will have a unique reference and the transaction information cannot be used more than once. So the information collected by the card reader cannot be re-used by anyone else. The name of the cardholder is also not entered on the security chip. So the details about the cardholder will not be available to the identity thieves from the processing machine. In some systems, the account number is also not attached to the chips and a routing number is used for every transaction. So there is no visible clue for anyone to trace back of the details of the cardholder.

The merchants are also happy with this arrangement. They will be able to process the payments of the customers in a shortest possible time and the risk of theft of the customer details is also reduced considerably.

The technology is brand new so perhaps the identity thieves have not got their hands to it. Presently it appears promising but time will decide whether it is a seamless technology to put an end to identity theft of credit cards.

MLM Companies: Prepaid Legal Leads With Identity Theft Protection

One of the top MLM companies these days when it comes to growth is Prepaid Legal. Prepaid Legal has been around for almost 40 years and has secured a top spot in the multilevel marketing industry. Recently, PPL has teamed up with a multinational company named Kroll International to provide Identity Theft Services in addition to it’s existing legal services. There are many other ID theft services in existence these days, but the service that Kroll Int. provides stands head and shoulders above the rest. The joining of these two well established companies should prove to be extremely profitable for both Kroll and PPL, as well as the people that represent them. It should also secure PPL a top position among other MLM companies for years to come.

So why is the Identity Theft Protection provided by Kroll any better than it’s competitors?

The ID Theft protection provided by Kroll Int. has many unique features such as:

1. Unlimited access to your credit report.

2. Your choice of unlimited access to either one credit agency or all three.

3. Access to your credit score.

4. Automatic email notification of any credit activity the same day that it occurs.

5. A team of specialist that will take the burden of ID restoration in the case your Identity is stolen.

This service is a perfect compliment to Prepaid Legal because it doubles the security that it provides it’s customers. PPL customers own the legal insurance because they feel they have something to lose. And the people that are in this category have something to lose because they have been responsible and in turn have great credit and a good name. Why not pay an extra ten dollars a month to protect such great assets?

So will this partnership translate into more success for the people that market PPL?

It’s a sad fact that many that enter the MLM industry never reach even a small bit of success with ANY company. Most enter into MLM with absolutely no clue and no real strategy to succeed. They are attracted to the promise of a quick road to easy street. The energy of the company leaders and the crowd of willing followers sucks them in and WHAM… their hooked. But the REAL story behind the stories of quick success are far different from each other.

The real story behind the stories of overnight success is that of years of hard work, struggle, and failure. The supposed overnight successes spent years developing skills that a great majority of people just don’t have, and that most are not willing to pay the price to develop. And regardless of the fact that some do have a tremendous amount of “quick success”, 90+ % of people representing MLM companies wont ever get to leader status in MLM. If you don’t want to be part of the 90+% of mediocre performers and flat out failures, it’s a MUST that you gain the skill necessary to gain financial and time freedom. And remember, if it was easy it wouldn’t be success.

Understanding Identity Theft

Identity theft, by definition, is a type of fraud wherein an individual assumes another individual’s identity. This is often the case when an individual is interested in obtaining another’s credit or finances, including all other benefits that may come with these interests.

Between 2008 and 2009 over eleven million American’s lives were affected by identity theft. If this trend remains, one in every twenty Americans will be affected by identity theft by the end of 2010. Generally, statistics have proven that young adults and seniors are most at risk for identity theft, as of the end of 2009.

Legally, there are several types of identity theft that exist:

Criminal Identity Theft: Criminal identity theft is when an individual wants to use another person’s identity to perform a crime or to conduct any sort of criminal activity. Crimes may include stealing a credit card, stealing bank account information or a phone number/bill or permanent address. These stolen items, including forms of identification and credit are often used to make large purchases, to travel or obtain personal loans.

Medical Identity Theft: When a person is looking to receive medical attention or obtain prescriptions of any sort, medical identity theft can occur. Using counterfeit checks for payment, as well as payment with an ATM/check card often occurs with medical identity theft.

Commercial Identity Theft: In this instance, an individual or business will use another business’s name, credit, address, reputation, etc., for credit purposes or to obtain new business. For the business whose identity has been stolen, even if momentarily, a loss of credit, reputation and finances can be extorted from that business.

Identity Cloning: An individual who commits identity cloning will assume another person’s identity in their daily life to find a job, steal benefits or to obtain a passport. Sometimes an individual will even change their physical appearance to match that of the identity they are stealing.

There are several ways in which an individual or entity can steal an identity. There are many records that exist within online and public systems. Phone and bank records can be stolen via the mail system, and some go so far as to break into a home to take personal information.

If your identity is stolen, what should you do? Initially one should consider filing a police report and notifying their creditors of the stolen information. Bank cards, credit cards and other forms of identification can be monitored, if asked.

The Federal Trade Commission is now tracking losses that occur due to identity theft. Due to the high numbers of incidents, identity fraud insurance is now available through most insurance companies. Although this may not protect you, your finances or information completely, it is a proactive measure that is often low in annual cost.

Identity theft occurs around the globe, every day. It is important to fully understand proactive measure to take, but also, procedures to take if identity theft occurs. If identity theft is not caught within a timely manner, the amount of debt that may occur could be substantial.

What is Identity Theft? Really, What is it?

I write plenty about Identity Theft, but I feel I should delve into this term a little bit deeper. What is Identity Theft? Really, What is it?

A Legal Definition of Identity Theft per Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003, Identity Theft Means:

The term identity theft means a fraud committed using the identifying information of another person. 16 CFR 603.2

In recent years, Identity Theft term became sort of an umbrella term for many different crimes: credit card fraud, phone/utilities fraud, insurance fraud, basically Identity Theft and Identity Fraud.

From a legal stand point, Identity Theft crime happens when your information has been stolen for the purpose of committing a fraud in your name.

However, Financial Institutions define Identity Theft and Identity Fraud complete differently.

Identity Fraud, in their view, or Credit Card Fraud happens when an existing credit card account was used without the cardholders consent. Per the Fair Credit Billing Act, the cardholders liability is .00 that is provided the fraudulent charges were reported within 60 days from the date of the statement. In most cases, the Financial Institutions will write them off without complete investigation. It is more cost effective for them to write it off and collect on the insurance than to conduct a full investigation. When someone opens a new account in the victims name, Financial Institutions call this crimes New account fraud or True name fraud, which, in their view, is considered to be Identity Theft. Even then, they may not conduct an investigation.

A true Identity Theft happens when someone takes over someone elses persona. A great example is when a Social Security Number is used for employment purposes by an illegal immigrant. A true Identity Theft is not as common as Identity Fraud.

Once the personal identifying information has been stolen, it is more likely a financially related fraud will be committed. It has been reported by the victims of identity theft that more than one type of a fraud has been committed against them.

Which ones are the most common?

Credit Cards-61% Banking Accounts-33% Telephone Service-11% Internet Payment Accounts-5% E-mail and other Internet Accounts-4% Medical Insurance-3% Other Accounts-1%

Source: Federal Trade Commission

To further classify the Identity Theft, It is important to understand that the financial related fraud is not the only outcome of the stolen identity. It includes but not limited to the following:

Social Security Number Misuse: This 9 digit number basically holds a key to our identity. Once someone has your SSN, they can get a hold of a lot of sensitive information. With SSN, the thieves can open new credit card accounts, get a hold of existing accounts, get loans, new cars, etc. In non-financial related cases, the victims SSN can be used for employment purposes, for tax purposes or tax avoidance, getting benefits, unemployment insurance, etc. These types of cases are very difficult to discover. Medical Identity Theft: A lot of thieves have discovered that they can get medical services pretending to be someone else. They provide a medical provider with someone elses insurance information or any other personal information belonging to the victim. The thieves get the service and the victim gets billed for the services. Or the victims insurance gets billed. If the thief had a serious medical condition, it is going to stay on the victims record. Drivers License Theft: Anything that the thief has done while using your information, either it is DUI or a speeding ticket, it will be reflected on your record. If those tickets are not paid and warrants get issued and you get pulled over, you can get arrested. In those cases, it is best to be represented by an attorney, because it is more than just filing a report with FTC. Criminal Identity Theft: Just like it is described above, if the thief committed a crime and got cut and gave your identifying information, the record will be entered in your name. These types of cases are very difficult to clear up and would require a legal representation. It takes years to clear your name and record; sometimes, however, it is not fully resolved for life.

Although everyone is at risk of becoming an identity theft victim, the more steps you take to prevent it from occurring, the less likely you will become one.
